Only one person has sofar been rescued and several people feared dead after a four-storied building collapsed on Friday evening in Makindye, a Kampala suburb.

According to the Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, the incident is believed to have happened at around 9pm in Klezia Zone, Makindye division Kampala district, behind Calendar hotel.

“Police has responded to a distress call in Kelezia zone, Makindye division where a four-storied building under construction has collapsed,”Enanga said in a statement.

“A number of people are trapped under the rubble but rescue efforts are underway by a joint team of Police Fire and Rescue services and KCCA.”

However, according to police, details concerning the exact number of people who were at the building at the time of the collapse are still scanty.

Police further noted that the owner of the building is yet to be identified. Some of the past incidents of building cave-ins have been attributed to engineers doing shoddy engineering time. Police has promised to give more details in due course.

The development comes only hours after a heavy downpour ravaged several parts of Kampala leading to floods, whereas two bodies were recovered from Nakivubo channel at Clock Tower after the deceased were swept by water on Friday.
