A team of Joint Security Forces are investigating the latest attack on police after armed gun riding a motorcycle ambushed Kensington Police Station near Kensington Apartments in Kyanja, a Kampala suburb.

According to eyewitnesses around the place, the incident happened last night on Sunday November 13, 2022.

“We heard heavy gunfire at the police post,” said a resident of Kensington apartments who preferred anonymity to speak freely. “It was a serious exchange of fire between the attackers and police,” he added.

Security officials at the scene of crime said two gunmen stormed the police post and opened fire at the cops on duty. The attackers were repelled before fleeing on their motorcycle, and fortunately, no officer was injured during the exchange of bullets.

Officials further said since the area is covered by CCTV, this will help in identifying the attackers or the number plate of the motorcycle.

The Kisaasi-Kyanja area has over the last decade witnessed an increase in attacks by gunmen and terrorists.

In 2012, Muslim cleric Abasi Abubaker Kiweewa, was shot dead at his supermarket in Kyanja, Former AIGP Andrew Kaweesi was killed in Kisaasi in 2017.

In October 2021, one person was killed and three others were injured in a bomb attack in Kyanja.

In 2016, Police identified Kyanja as one of the top robbery spots in the Kampala Metropolitan area following back-to-back armed robbery incidents in the area.

The development comes less than a fortnight after armed men attacked Busiika Police station in Luwero District, killing two officers on duty.

It remains unclear if a rebel movement operating in Uganda is behind this spate of attacks, but government has often come out and linked such attacks to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
