Fear Grips Kampala Suburbs as Wild Animal Threatens Lives and Property

Communities in Kampala metropolitan areas, including Mukono, Kiira, Wakiso, and Kayunga, are living in fear following reports of a wild animal, suspected to be a leopard, wreaking havoc in their neighborhoods. The animal, which may have escaped from an unidentified national park, has been preying on livestock and raising concerns about potential threats to human life.

Residents Speak Out

Local residents report that the animal has been prowling at night, targeting domestic animals such as goats, pigs, and cows. James Matovu, a resident of Kiira, revealed that the predator has been in the area for nearly two weeks, leaving a trail of destruction.

“The animal has been killing our livestock, and now we fear it might start attacking people,” Matovu stated. He urged the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and security agencies to intervene and eliminate the threat before it escalates further.

Growing Fear and Uncertainty

The presence of the wild animal has led to widespread panic. Many residents have stopped keeping livestock outdoors or grazing animals in fear of attacks. Some have called for guidance on how to track the animal and ensure it is captured or identified without endangering lives.

One resident remarked, “We no longer feel safe. If this continues, we may have to abandon our livestock altogether.”

Authorities Yet to Respond

Efforts to reach Bashir Hangi, UWA’s communications manager, for comment were unsuccessful by the time of reporting. However, residents are hopeful that wildlife authorities and security personnel will respond swiftly to address the situation.

This incident underscores the need for vigilance and coordinated action to ensure both human and animal safety in the affected areas. For now, the residents remain on high alert, awaiting intervention.
