Police have suspended with immediate effect all planned rallies and country wide mobilisation campaigns being conducted by National Unity Platform (NUP) party leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobiwine.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Maj Gen Katsigazi Tumusiime said in a statement on Wednesday that NUP had broken parameters agreed upon with the party, whose leader has been drawing large audiences on the roads, causing traffic jams, loss of businesses, and malicious damage to property since August 28, 2023.

“The mobilisation activities were used to incite violence, promote sectarianism, and make a legitimate cause for the removal of an elected government and the issuance of defamatory statements against the person of the President,” Katsigazi noted, citing the national police law.

Police say that NUP had violated guidelines agreed with the party whose leader, also known as Bobi Wine, has uninterruptedly been traversing major regions of the country, pulling huge crowds since August 28.

“We are sending this strong message, that our country, Uganda, will not wait for its villages, towns, urban centres and cities to burn, before taking action to protect its citizens and property. We are going to put an end to the mob mentality, bullying and intimidating tactics of NUP radicals against innocent civilians and law enforcers.”

Bobi Wine was due to conclude the first phase of his planned nationwide mobilization in Arua City on 13th September. In Hoima city on Tuesday, he said he was aware that the government was moving to block his activities or potentially hold him answerable to his recent remarks.
