The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango has confirmed that Police are Investigating circumstances under which city Lawyer Andrew Kasirye acquired a gun.

According to Onyango, police have received reports that Kasirye goes around intimidating people with a fire arm which is contrary to the law.

“We received various information that he puts people at gun point. According to records that i crosschecked with the  Private firearm department of police, they don’t have Andrew Kasirye on their list”.

Onyango added.. “I have even seen the recommendation by the Attorney General William Byaruhanga for Andrew Kasirye to be licenced for a firearm. I have crosschecked with our Security and Private firearms Department and they do not have any record of Andrew Kasirye to having a firearm. As Police, we shall investigate the matter.”

“If you want to get legally or acquire a private firearm, you are supposed to pick a form at Police headquarters then you take back the form to the Inspector General of Police for him to vet and approve you,” Onyango added.

Meanwhile, Kasirye has since dismissed allegations that he drew a gun at an unnamed person following a disagreement recently.

“It is not true. I have never possessed a gun. I don’t have a firearm. I do not even know how to use a gun. I have never drawn a gun against anybody. I really do not know where these stories are coming from.” Kasirye told the press on Saturday.
“At one time I indeed applied for a firearm certificate but I never followed it up about three or four years ago. I applied, I never got it and that was it.”

Kasirye is a former president of the Uganda Law Society and vice-president of East Africa Law Society.

Earlier this month, Kasirye was in news headlines after it emerged that he attempted to frustrate a police investigation into how Benedict Sekabira, Bank of Uganda’s Director for Financial Markets Development, acquired title deeds belonging to closed banks.
