President Museveni Pardons 79 Prisoners On Medical And Humanitarian Grounds

President Yoweri Museveni has pardoned a total of 79 convicts who have been serving sentences at different Prisons across the country.

This is contained in a letter dated January 3, 2022 the President wrote to the Commissioner-General of Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija directing for the release of the listed prisoners.

The president said, he exercised the power given to him by the Constitution and as recommended by the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy to pardon the prisoners on “public health and humanitarian grounds.”

Among those freed is one Ms. Rodriguez Fagundez Albelys Doralys, a Venezuelan national who has been serving a sentence for drug trafficking.

Doralys was arrested in June 2018 at Entebbe International Airport with narcotic drugs, which she had swallowed.

The 114 pellets measuring 1.6 kilograms were detected in her stomach upon being scanned at the airport.

In 2020, President Museveni pardoned 833 prisoners countrywide through the Prerogative.
