Six people have been confirmed dead following a fatal road crash that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in Kyankwanzi District.
The accident happened at around 4:00am on March 1, 2026, at Kyakabuga village along the Kiboga–Hoima highway when a passenger bus registration number UBQ 595G, traveling from Kampala to Hoima, collided head-on with a Fuso Fighter truck registration number UBF 541C. The truck, which was transporting charcoal, was reportedly coming from the direction of Hoima.
According to preliminary police reports, the impact of the collision triggered a fire that engulfed both vehicles, burning them extensively.
Police confirmed that six people died on the spot. Two of the deceased were occupants of the bus, while four were in the Fuso truck. Seven other victims sustained critical injuries in the crash.
The deceased have been identified as Muhumuza Gerald, 40, the bus driver and a resident of Hoima West Division, and Linongola Matsukizo, 47, a Congolese businesswoman. The four victims who were traveling in the truck had not yet been identified by press time.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Hoima Hospital mortuary, while the injured were rushed to Kikonda Health Centre III for medical attention.
Rescue teams from Kyankwanzi and Hoima responded to the scene, with a firefighter from Hoima helping to contain and extinguish the blaze.
By Sunday morning, the wreckage of the two vehicles remained at the scene as authorities worked to clear the highway.
Motorists using the Kiboga–Hoima road have been advised to exercise caution when approaching Kyakabuga, as part of the road remains temporarily closed to allow ongoing recovery operations.
Police in Wamala Region, led by the Regional Police Public Relations Officer SSP Lamech Kigozi, said investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Authorities extended their condolences to the bereaved families and wished a quick recovery to those injured in the tragic incident.
