Sudan Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok is under house arrest by military forces reportedly attempting a coup on the transition government in the capital Khartoum.

Hamdok has reportedly called on the people to “occupy the streets to defend their revolution.”

Other reports indicate civilians have already moved onto the streets to protest the developments.

Sudan is ruled amid a 39-month transitional period under a transitional government of military and civilian elements, established after the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. The transitional period is set to be followed by elections to form a new government.

Sudan’s Sovereign Council is currently chaired by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the constitutional document stipulates that the presidency of the council will be transferred to civilians by mid-November this year.

So far, the ruling civilian-military coalition has failed to establish the transitional legislative council and the elections commission or reach consensus on a constitution for the country.
