Three officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) have died while four others sustained serious injuries following a fatal road crash involving a URA vehicle and a crossing elephant in Murchison Falls National Park in Nwoya District.

The tragic accident occurred on the night of May 24, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m. along the Arua-Kampala highway section passing through the national park.

One of the deceased has been identified as Robert Wamala Lumanyika, a URA tax educator. He was among seven URA staff members travelling in a Toyota Hiace registration number UA 20121AA from Arua City to Kampala after official duty.

According to Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, preliminary investigations indicate that the driver collided with an elephant that was crossing the road, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
“The Toyota Hiace was carrying seven URA officials travelling from Arua back to Kampala when it knocked a crossing elephant. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, leading to a fatal crash. Three occupants died instantly while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries,” Kananura said.

Police officers responded swiftly to the scene and evacuated the injured victims to Kiryandongo Hospital for emergency treatment before they were later transferred to Kampala for specialized medical care.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Anaka Hospital Mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted.

Authorities have since urged motorists to exercise heightened caution when driving through wildlife conservation areas, particularly during night hours when animals frequently cross roads.

Police further reminded drivers to strictly observe speed limits and remain alert while travelling through national parks to avoid similar tragedies.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
