Police in Nakifuma East, Mukono District, have arrested two women after they were allegedly found engaging in same-sex activity by members of the local community.

The suspects have been identified as Mukyala Jemimah, a 29-year-old medical records officer, and Kiconco Immaculate, a 32-year-old businesswoman. They were reportedly handed over to police by residents following the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, Mukyala’s husband allegedly found the two women together in their matrimonial home before reporting the matter to the LC1 chairperson of Nakifuma East.

The local leader subsequently convened an emergency village meeting to address the allegations.

Residents who attended the meeting reportedly resolved that the two women should leave the village with immediate effect before they were later handed over to police for further action.

Mukyala was also reportedly informed that she would leave without her daughter, who would remain in the custody of her grandmother.

A letter from the LC1 office, seen by this publication, reportedly directed the two women to vacate the village within one hour, citing allegations of homosexuality. The letter further stated that their continued presence in the community could negatively influence other residents and declared them unwelcome in the area.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, Mukyala’s husband expressed disappointment over the incident.
“I had been hearing rumours about my wife, but I did not believe them until I saw them with my own eyes,” he said.
Kampala Metropolitan Police officials confirmed the arrests, saying the two women are being held as investigations continue.

“We have two women in our custody who were arrested for allegedly engaging in acts of homosexuality in Nakifuma, Mukono District.

Investigations are ongoing, and once they are complete, the suspects will be presented before court,” officials said.
By the time of publication, the pair remained in police custody, and it was not yet clear whether they would be formally charged.

Under Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, penalties depend on the specific offence alleged. The law provides for life imprisonment for certain same-sex sexual acts, while the offence of “aggravated homosexuality,” as defined by the Act, carries the possibility of the death penalty.

President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-Homosexuality Act into law in May 2023. In April 2024, Uganda’s Constitutional Court upheld most provisions of the law after dismissing a petition challenging its constitutionality.
Police investigations into the allegations are ongoing.
