Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairman Kagwa Kicks The Bucket

The chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Meddie Kaggwa has passed on this morning.

Sad news of Kaggwa’s death was pronounced by doctors at Case Hospital where he was rushed on Wednesday morning.

He is said to have fainted in his official car this morning around 8:00Am along Mulago Road as he was heading to work and according to an eyewitness, the car had to be broken into to remove him.

Kaggwa was former Kawempe South Member of Parliament and a very jolly fellow who liked cracking jokes.

He had served as chairperson of Uganda Human Rights Commission for more than eight years.

He was also Commissioner and Special Rapporteur on Prisons and Conditions of Detention of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and a Commissioner of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission.

He held a Master of Laws degree from National University of Ireland, a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Uganda and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, Uganda.

He also served a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly and a delegate in the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1995 Constitution. He was married with five children.
