Africa Kwetu Motorsport Fuel Economy Tour Enters Day Two

Participants in the Africa Kwetu Motorsport Fuel Economy Tour start day two of the adventure challenge with Bamboo tree planting in Hoima as one way to conserve the environment.

The three day 950km event started on Thursady at Kabira Country Club with 27 participants who passed scrutineering.

Some crews failed to make it due to security fears following the political violence caused by the arrest of National Unity platform presidential candidate Robert Kyagulayi on Wednesday, while two-time national Rally Champion Suzan Muwonge dropped out of the event due to health reasons following a malaria attack.

The crews on Thursday covered 340kms from Kampala, Bukomero, and Kabwoya Game Reserve.

On Friday, the crews covered 230kms from Hoima through Kagadi, Semuliki National Game Park, and Sempaya Hot springs in Bundibugyo before spending a night in Fort Portal.

“We were affected by the riots in Kampala as some participants pulled out at the last hours, everything is okay and we are moving as planned,” Clerk of the course Justin Mungoma said.

“So far we are moving on well and we are having fun,” female participant Margret Birabwa said.

National Motocross team captain Maxime Van Pee who is riding a bike said that he is using the event to gain fitness as he prepares for the December event in Busiika.

“I have not been practicing and am using this event to work on my fitness because soon my bike will be arriving in the country,” Maxime said.

Team Wobbly ready for the journey

The 950km adventure tour organised by United Motorsport Club (UMOSPOC) and Enduro Uganda is in line with the world motorsport governing body (FIA) objectives promoting road safety, tourism, and environment protection.

On Saturday, the crews in their different categories will head to Kasese, Kazinga Channel, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Ishaka Escapements in Bushenyi and end the tour in Mbarara for the prize giving.

The event organised following the cancelation of the motorsport calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic is supported by Hotel, Triangle, Ministry of Health, Nyaika Hotel and Rosefoam World Wide Mover, and Uganda Wildlife Authority.
