On November 26th, 2022, armed assailants ambushed a joint security patrol in Kapeeka town council, Nakaseke district, and shot dead a UPDF soldier identified as Private Tufeyo Obed. In retaliation, the officers who were on patrol fired back and put out of action two assailants, and one AK-47 rifle was recovered.

SCP Fred Enanga, the police Spokesman, on Monday, November 28th, 2022, during the weekly security press briefing identified the two assailants as Ssekimpi Denis, 50, a resident of Kikuyu village, Namusera in Wakiso municipality, and Tasis Mulegeraa, a Burundian national.

Police findings further established that Ssekimpi was serving as the National Unity Platform (NUP) party district executive committee member for Wakiso district at the time he was killed in an armed attack on security.

On Monday, November 28th, 2022, NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine tweeted that the government is plotting to use current trends of attacks to implicate opposition activists, mostly his supporters, after discovering that Ssekimpi was involved in an armed attack against security in Kapeeka that claimed his life.

“If you remember how the Bijambiya murders in Masaka ended, don’t be shocked when the current wave of attacks on security installations takes a certain turn. So let us brace for more Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana scenarios…” Bobi Wine tweeted.

However, Bobi Wine did not explain how Ssekimpi, a fellow NUP leader in Wakiso district, was found in Kapeeka town council with a gun and the motive to attack security personnel while on foot patrol.

He did not condemn the violent and unlawful act of attacking and killing security personnel while on their duties.

This has since generated different opinions from the general public, with some saying Bobi Wine’s response was meant to cover up for the NUP leadership not to be implicated in the criminality since one of them was killed in the attack.

Bobi Wine, on the other hand, admitted that the arrests of the two NUP legislators aided in putting an end to the wave of machete-wielding that swept the Masaka sub-region last year.

The insecurity that left about 30 people, mostly elderly, death came to an end after the arrest of the two legislators and other suspects, especially youths, who are currently under detention answering different charges, including murder, attempted murder, terrorism, and treason.
