Western Uganda-based Parental Care Primary and Nursery School, located in Bushenyi District, has emerged victorious in this year’s Inter-Schools Poetry and Debate Competitions, which were held at St Leo’s Kyegobe High School in Fort Portal City.

The competitions, which were held on Saturday, July 8, 2023, and organised by Rwenzori Debate Forum, together with Kawanda Agricultural Research Institute under the theme; ‘Food Insecurity, Ending Hunger and Poverty In Uganda’, featured contestants from University to Primary levels.

Parental Care Primary and Nursery School claimed the trophy at the Primary level following a stiff battle against Green Circle Primary School in the finals, after a lengthy competition that attracted over ten primary schools from various districts in Uganda.

Speaking at the event shortly after his school had claimed victory, Mr. Bright Beyongyera, a trainer and a teacher at Parental Care and Primary School Bushenyi, said that; “The school took a team of 22 pupils and they competed with over 10 schools in poetry, debate, and public speaking.”

He added; “This victory indicates that our school is doing a great job at not only educating learners but also equipping them with other skills that will make them responsible citizens in future, who can debate for the country in parliament.

“It’s a moment of pomp and glamour for us as Parental Care. Year in and Year out our performance has been on top notch. I want to assure our dear parents that their children are in safe hands and they should bring more students because we do what we know best, so as to make our learners capable leaders of tomorrow and unique citizens,” Beyongera noted.

Important to note however is that this victory comes a few months after the same school won the National Speech Competitions for both Secondary and Junior schools that was held at the Parliament of Uganda earlier this year, during which they beat various ‘big name’ schools in the country.
