The National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled Florence Asio as its new flag bearer for the Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament seat , a move that rekindles political competition in a constituency long seen as Speaker Anita Annet Among’s stronghold.
Speaking during the unveiling on Monday, NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, said Asio’s selection marks a new chapter in the party’s struggle for fairness and justice in Uganda’s politics.
“This is a clear message to those who think they can silence the will of the people. We are standing with the people of Bukedea to reclaim their voice,” Kyagulanyi said.
The announcement follows weeks of controversy after three women Mercy Marion Alupo (NUP), Norma Susan Otai (FDC), and Hellen Akol Odeke (Independent) were removed from the voters’ register under unclear circumstances. The move left Speaker Among unopposed, sparking anger among residents and opposition leaders who accused the Electoral Commission of acting under political pressure.
Kyagulanyi condemned what he described as “blatant abuse of the electoral process,” claiming the opposition candidates were struck off the register without a fair hearing. “None of them were ever called before any tribunal. They just woke up one morning to find out that they had been deleted,” he said.
He added that while NUP has taken the matter to court, the party could not sit back and watch Bukedea be “denied a real choice.” The introduction of Florence Asio, he said, was proof that the opposition was ready to fight back through lawful and peaceful means.
“Florence Asio represents a new generation of leaders , young, courageous, and connected to the ordinary people,” Kyagulanyi said. “We trust that this time, the regime will not try to block her as well.”
Asio, who hails from Kolir Sub-county in Bukedea District, is a community mobilizer known for her grassroots work, especially among women and youth groups. Party officials described her as approachable, passionate, and deeply rooted in the district’s social life.
“I’m humbled by this trust,” Asio said shortly after her unveiling. “I come not to fight individuals, but to serve the people of Bukedea. They deserve better, honest leadership, equal opportunity, and a voice in Parliament that truly represents them.”
Her entry into the race has reignited excitement among NUP supporters in Bukedea, many of whom say they finally have someone who understands their daily struggles.
Political observers believe the contest between the youthful Asio and the powerful Speaker Among will be one of the most intriguing political battles in the coming elections , a clash of influence, resources, and ideals.
As Kyagulanyi put it, “This is not just about Bukedea. It’s about giving Ugandans hope that even in the face of injustice, the people’s will can still prevail.”
