Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among on Tuesday evening evening joined the Ruparelia Foundation and other partners at Kabira Country Club for the official launch of the upcoming RR Eye Camp in Bukedea District in honour of the late Rajiv Ruparelia.

Rajiv, son to Sudhir and Jyotsna Ruparelia died in a car accident along Busabala Road in May last year.

During the launch, Jyotsna Ruparelia, the director of Ruparelia Group of Companies said this eye camp is special to them because it is in memory of their son, Rajiv who deeply believed in philanthropy.

Speaker Among commended the Ruparelia Foundation, headed by city businessman, Sudhir Ruparelia for complementing government programs by bringing services closer to the people, thus serving humanity.

The eye camp, scheduled to take place from Friday, 27th to Sunday, 29th March 2026, at Bukedea Teaching Hospital, aims to provide free eye screenings and basic treatment for at least 2,000 people, conduct 300 cataract surgeries, and 50 specialised surgeries for children, among others.

The camp, organized by the Ruparelia Foundation in memory of the late Rajiv Ruparelia, is providing essential eye care services to residents of the Teso sub-region and surrounding areas.

It is anticipated to screen and treat more than 2,000 individuals over its duration, offering free eye examinations, cataract surgeries, prescription glasses, and other treatments to combat preventable blindness.

Speaker Among, who represents Bukedea Woman Constituency, commended the Ruparelia Foundation—led by city businessman Sudhir Ruparelia—for its consistent philanthropic efforts that complement government programs in healthcare delivery.

She highlighted the camp’s significance in addressing eye health challenges faced by rural communities, where access to specialized medical services remains limited.

“This initiative is a testament to private sector commitment to social welfare,” Among said. “By restoring sight, we are restoring dignity and productivity to our people. I urge more partners to emulate this model of community support.”

The RR Eye Camp, to be held at Bukedea Teaching Hospital will draw partnerships with medical professionals, volunteers, and local leaders. Previous editions have successfully restored vision to hundreds through cataract removals and other interventions, reducing the burden of visual impairment in underserved regions.

Health experts note that cataract-related blindness is a major issue in Uganda, particularly among the elderly in rural areas.
Such outreach programs play a vital role in achieving national goals for universal eye health coverage.
