After eight years of legal battles, Yusuf Nyanzi, previously embroiled in three high-profile cases, has been acquitted by the International Crimes Division of the High Court regarding the attempted murder of Works and Transport Minister General Katumba Wamala.

Alongside Hussein Sserubula, Nyanzi walked free as the court deemed the evidence insufficient to link them to charges of terrorism and the murder of Katumba’s daughter, Brenda Nantongo Wamala, and his driver, Haruna Kayondo, as well as the attempted murder of Gen Katumba himself. Justice Alice Komuhangi relayed the ruling, freeing both individuals.

However, the court upheld charges against six other accused persons, including Muhammad Kagugube, Sirimani Kisambira, Abdullah Aziz Ramadhan, Dunka, Kamada Walusimbi, Habib Ramadhan Marjan, and Huzaifah Wampa. These charges stem from various murders and robberies within the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

These charges date back to incidents such as the tragic events of June 1, 2021, along Kisota road in Kisaasi, Kampala, resulting in the deaths of Brenda Nantongo and Haruna Kayondo. Additionally, the accused are implicated in other crimes, including murders and robberies in various locations.

Yusuf Nyanzi, who has faced multiple high-profile cases, including the murders of Major Muhammad Kiggundu and former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, has been discharged. However, concerns about potential re-arrest linger despite his lawyer’s relief at his client’s release.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), represented by spokesperson Jacquelyn Okui, has expressed readiness to prosecute the remaining six suspects before a Panel of three Judges of the International Crimes Division.urn
