The chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has paid tribute to the late Col (Rtd) Lauben Mugenyi for his dedicated service to the country, the National Resistance Army, and subsequently the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), where he served in both command and staff positions.

“The departed senior officer has been instrumental in the restoration of peace and security in this country, and the UPDF is saddened by the loss of a senior and professional cadre whose input was still much needed,” Gen Kainerugaba said in a eulogy delivered by Maj Gen Silver Kayemba at the funeral service held at St. Luke Church, Ntinda.

Col (Rtd) Lauben Mugenyi, who passed away on 2 July 2024, joined the Defence Forces on 15 May 1985 and rose through the ranks until he retired from active service on 28 April 2024.

Throughout his career, he served in various capacities both in Uganda and abroad.

On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA), Mrs. Edith Buturo, Undersecretary of Finance and Administration, paid tribute to the late Col for his outstanding contribution to the service of the country during his tenure until his retirement.

Col Kenneth Muhaire, a close friend of the late Col (Rtd) Mugenyi, described him as a loving family man and enterprising individual who worked diligently in the UPDF until his retirement.

The children of the late Col expressed their gratitude to the UPDF and former colleagues for their support during this difficult time, remembering their father as a humble and kind-hearted person who always wished well for others.

The funeral service was attended by Generals, senior officials from the MODVA, senior and junior officers, and many others.
