Defence Attachés accredited to Uganda have commended the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), particularly the Mountain Division, for their outstanding contributions to the stabilisation and pacification of the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This recognition follows the joint UPDF/FARDC operation Shujaa aimed at combating the terrorist group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

A delegation of 16 Defence Attachés, representing various embassies in Uganda and part of the Defence Attachés Association (DAA), visited the Mountain Division headquarters at Muhoti Barracks in Fort Portal City to receive updates on the operation’s progress.

Led by Dean Col Patrick Nkaduda from the Kenyan Embassy, the attachés expressed their appreciation for the UPDF’s dedication to fighting global terrorism, noting that the “fruits of the efforts can be seen.”

The attachés also thanked the UPDF for their openness and willingness to engage with them across various departments whenever needed.

Emphasising the need for collaborative action against global terrorism, the Defence Attachés pledged their support to the UPDF in its mission to eradicate the ADF and other terrorist groups to ensure a stable and peaceful region. They highlighted the importance of cutting off funding and resources to terrorist organisations to diminish their capacity for violence.

On behalf of the UPDF Mountain Division, Commander Col Godfrey Kyomuhendo expressed gratitude to the Defence Attachés for taking the time from their busy schedules to visit and show interest in the fight against terrorism. “Fighting the ADF is not merely a UPDF/FARDC affair; it’s a collective responsibility. Your interest and support energise our moral spirit to combat this threat.”

Col Kyomuhendo later guided the diplomats to stunning tourist attractions, including the dramatic landscapes of the Rwenzori Mountain ranges and the hot springs of Semliki National Park. The Defence Attachés expressed their intention to organise future visits to these sites with their families.
