Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 29, at the age of 100. His family confirmed that he died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by loved ones.
Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, was celebrated for his lifelong dedication to promoting peace, democracy, and human rights. Following his presidency, Carter continued his humanitarian efforts through the Carter Center, an organization he founded in 1982 to advance global health, democracy, and conflict resolution. His work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
“Dad was a beacon of hope and compassion to so many,” said Chip Carter, one of his four children. “He believed in the power of peace and love to bring people together. We are proud of his legacy and grateful for the outpouring of support during this time.”
Carter’s legacy extended far beyond the political arena. Alongside his wife, Rosalynn, he devoted countless hours to Habitat for Humanity, building homes for those in need. The Carters became symbols of humility and service, often seen working side by side with volunteers.
The former president’s death comes just weeks after the passing of Rosalynn Carter, his wife of 77 years, who died on Nov. 19, 2023. Together, they shared a commitment to improving mental health awareness and supporting human rights initiatives. Their enduring partnership became an inspiration to many.
Carter entered hospice care in February 2023, and his final public appearance was at Rosalynn’s memorial service. Despite declining health, he remained a unifying figure for millions.
As the longest-living U.S. president, Carter’s life was marked by resilience and service. His time in office may have been brief, but his decades of post-presidential work earned him widespread respect and admiration.
Plans for public tributes will include observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., with a private burial to take place in Plains. Details of the state funeral and other commemorative events are expected to be announced soon.
