A brief border standoff occurred on January 3, 2025, when 52 Congolese soldiers crossed into Ugandan territory at Awasi Center in Afuda Parish, Jangokoro Sub-County, Zombo District. The soldiers claimed ownership of the land where a joint water project between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is being developed.

The project, aimed at drilling boreholes to provide clean water to communities on both sides of the border, became a flashpoint due to unresolved territorial concerns. The situation raised tensions as the Congolese soldiers occupied the area temporarily, insisting that the land belonged to the DRC.

Zombo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Festus Ayikobua, responded swiftly, emphasizing that the contested land falls under Ugandan sovereignty. The RDC reassured the public that Uganda would firmly uphold its territorial integrity. To address the incursion, Ugandan security forces were deployed to the area, prompting the Congolese soldiers to withdraw without confrontation.

Speaking to local media, Ayikobua highlighted the importance of peaceful resolution mechanisms, adding that diplomatic channels would be pursued to prevent future misunderstandings. He also reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to regional cooperation and development, particularly in shared infrastructure projects like the water initiative.

The Zombo water project is seen as a vital step in improving access to clean water for border communities. However, the incident underscores the challenges of implementing cross-border initiatives in areas with unresolved territorial disputes. Efforts to mediate and clarify boundaries will be crucial to fostering cooperation and avoiding further conflicts.
