Three Notorious Criminals Arrested In Lubigi Swamp

In a high-stakes operation, a joint team of police, the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), and local leaders dismantled a criminal hideout in the Lubigi swamp. The gang, notorious for terrorizing commuters through violent robberies and phone snatching, had set up grass shelters as their base of operations.

Police spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma revealed that the team discovered the shelters during a sweep of the swamp, leading to the recovery of numerous stolen items. Among the items seized were 15 motorcycle number plates, 6 motorcycle side mirrors, 7 mobile phones, a solar battery, motorcycle logbooks, cash in Somali and Ugandan shillings, and breaking implements such as pangas and screwdrivers. These findings confirmed the gang’s involvement in theft and robberies targeting hardworking residents.

Three suspects, identified as Niyonzima Richard (28), Kiiza David (42), and Ngobi Ali (21), were arrested during the operation. They are now in custody, facing charges related to theft and possession of stolen property. Investigations continue as authorities work to apprehend other members of the group.

The operation has brought much-needed relief to residents near the swamp, many of whom had lived in fear for months. “We are grateful to the security forces for responding to our cries,” said one commuter.

ACP Kituuma affirmed law enforcement’s dedication to maintaining order, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. “This operation demonstrates our resolve to protect citizens and eradicate crime,” he said.

Authorities believe the raid will deter similar criminal activities, marking a significant step toward restoring safety and security to the community.
