The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development is mourning the loss of one of its most distinguished officers, Mr. James Francis Natukunda, who passed away on January 24, 2025, at Mulago Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Natukunda, who served as a Principal Geologist, was a pillar in Uganda’s energy sector, with a career spanning over two decades. He joined the Ministry in 2002 and dedicated 22 years to advancing Uganda’s geological mapping, mineral exploration, and geothermal energy initiatives. His expertise and passion left an indelible mark on the country’s energy development programs.

In a heartfelt statement, the Ministry said, “We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this profoundly difficult time.”

Born in Ibanda District, Mr. Natukunda’s contributions extended far beyond his professional achievements. He began his career as a chemistry teacher at Kibubura Girls Secondary School in the late 1990s before pursuing his passion for geology. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from Makerere University in 1998 and later earned a Master’s degree in Mineral Resources Exploration from The University of Queensland, Australia, in 2012.

Throughout his career, Mr. Natukunda was a leader and innovator. As the former President of the Geothermal Association of Uganda (GAU), he played a pivotal role in advocating for geothermal energy exploration, a sector he began working on as early as 2004. His work included participation in multiple international geothermal energy conferences, where he shared insights into Uganda’s potential as a geothermal energy hub.

Mr. Natukunda also made significant contributions to hydropower development in Uganda through geotechnical investigations at several key sites. His dedication to publishing papers and providing updates on Uganda’s geothermal projects showcased his commitment to knowledge sharing and advancing the country’s energy agenda.

Friends and colleagues had recently launched a fundraising campaign to support his treatment abroad, a testament to the respect and admiration he inspired among those who knew him. Tragically, his condition worsened before these efforts could come to fruition.

Mr. Natukunda’s passing is a profound loss not only for his family and friends but also for Uganda’s energy and mineral development sector. He is remembered as a visionary geologist, an educator, and a humble public servant who worked tirelessly to develop the nation’s resources.

He is survived by his family, who will cherish the legacy of a man who gave so much to his country.

A somber yet inspiring reminder of the depth of his contributions, Mr. Natukunda’s life is a testament to the transformative power of dedication and expertise in shaping a nation’s future. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
