The former Director of Transport in the Ministry of Works and Transport Benon Kajuna, has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Uganda Railways Corporation (URC).

His appointment comes amid the government’s rationalization efforts, which led to the abolition of director-level positions in all ministries to reduce administrative costs.

After serving in various capacities at the Ministry of Works for 24 years, Kajuna officially handed over his duties to the Permanent Secretary, Bageya Waiswa, before assuming his new role at URC. He replaces David Musoke Bulega, who had been acting as Managing Director for over a year.

Kajuna takes over URC at a critical time when the railway sector is facing multiple challenges. Reports indicate that the recently acquired UGX 48 billion locomotives are incompatible with Uganda’s aging railway infrastructure. According to engineers from the Uganda Railways Corporation Workers’ Union, the locomotives are designed for 90-ton rails, while Uganda’s railway system can only support 80-ton capacity. Additionally, the railway’s triangular sections are reportedly too small to accommodate the longer locomotives.

URC has downplayed concerns about the locomotives’ turning difficulties, but the issue remains a key concern for the corporation. Kajuna will also oversee efforts to modernize Uganda’s railway network, including the long-awaited construction of a standard gauge railway to improve regional connectivity and boost cargo transportation efficiency.

His appointment brings hope that Uganda Railways Corporation will see reforms that enhance efficiency and reliability in rail transport, which is crucial for reducing road congestion and lowering the cost of doing business in the country. However, his ability to navigate these infrastructural challenges will determine the success of his tenure at URC.
