A dramatic twist has unfolded in the Uganda Law Society’s (ULS) internal power struggle, as police launch an investigation into an attempted coup. The probe centres around Secretary Phillip Munaabi and Council Member Geoffrey Turyamusiima, accused of trying to overthrow President Isaac Ssemakadde and Vice President Asiimwe Anthony in November 2024.

Munaabi and Turyamusiima allegedly claimed the expulsion of Ssemakadde and Anthony was backed by a majority of the council. However, the legitimate council majority, led by Ssemakadde, swiftly suspended the duo, branding their actions unauthorized.

Criminal summons against two lawyers

According to criminal summons seen by the press, signed by Detective Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) Ahimbi MacLean from Kira Road Police Station, the two officials have been summoned to appear on April 1st on charges of forgery and spreading false information serious offenses under Ugandan law that carry penalties of up to ten years in prison. Legal experts warn that if convicted, the accused could face severe consequences for attempting to manipulate ULS governance and damage the organization’s credibility.

As the investigation unfolds, President Ssemakadde and Vice President Asiimwe remain abroad, engaged in official duties as part of a Diaspora outreach program. The ULS Secretariat has declined to comment on the ongoing probe.
