The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has extended financial assistance to the families affected by the tragic shooting on 20 October 2024 in Paimol village, Agago District.

The incident, involving Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier Private Ameny Bonny, left three people dead and three others injured.

The CDF through Lt Gen Sam Okiding, the Deputy CDF, handed over Uganda shillings five million to each family of the deceased and three million to those injured. “We are deeply sorry for what happened,” Lt Gen Okiding said, offering an apology on behalf of the UPDF. He reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to support the victims and ensure accountability.

Lt Gen Okiding also encouraged local parents to prioritise education, stating, “To compete in Uganda, one must have education,” and urged them to utilise government schemes like the Parish Development Model to tackle poverty, with a focus on agricultural initiatives.

Brig Gen Keith Katungi, Commander 5 Infantry Division, praised the community’s cooperation in maintaining peace, particularly in combating cattle raids. However, he highlighted the urgent need to address poverty and hunger in the region.

Agago District Chairperson, Mr Opio Leonard, expressed gratitude to the UPDF for its accountability, saying, “From covering burial expenses to fulfilling their financial pledge and offering an apology, this is a rare and commendable gesture.”

The victims of the shooting were identified as Akidi Santino (47), Apiyo Sunday (21), and Ajal Florence (16).

Private Ameny Bonny will face trial at the Division Court Martial on 19 November 2024 in Paimol village.
