Authorities in Mayuge District have launched an investigation into a fatal road accident that claimed the life of Hajjat Nusura Nabukalu, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Budaka District, on Sunday afternoon. The crash occurred around 4:30 PM in Musita Village, Baitambogwe Sub County, along the busy Jinja-Iganga Highway.

Police reports indicate that the accident involved a government vehicle, a Toyota Double Cabin with registration number UG 4803C, traveling towards Jinja, and an oncoming Isuzu vehicle, registration number KDH 025V. Preliminary investigations suggest the Toyota’s driver, Waiswa Khalid, attempted to overtake several vehicles when the collision occurred.

“The incident happened on December 29, 2024, at about 4:30 PM. The driver of the Toyota vehicle, while overtaking, collided head-on with the Isuzu truck heading in the opposite direction,” read part of a statement from the police.

The crash claimed the life of Hajjat Nusura Nabukalu instantly, while her driver, Waiswa Khalid, sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to Nakavule Hospital before being transferred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment.

Police teams, led by ASP Naikula John, the Traffic Officer in Charge at Magamaga Police Station, swiftly arrived at the scene to document the accident, recover the deceased’s body, and tow the vehicles to Magamaga Police Station for inspection.

Hajjat Nusura Nabukalu, a resident of Bugembe in Jinja, was known for her dedication to public service. Her death has left the community in shock and mourning. She was returning from a thanksgiving event in Nawansinge village, Iganga District, where she was the chief guest.

Her body was later taken to Jinja Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements revealed that she would be laid to rest at the Jinja City Muslim Cemetery next to her late husband, Juma Jalal.

The late RDC’s home in Wanyama Central, Jinja City North Division, served as a resting place for mourners on Monday morning. A public prayer service and funeral rites were scheduled to take place at Bugembe Blue Primary School before her final burial.

The tragic incident has left many reflecting on the contributions of Hajjat Nabukalu, a leader described by peers as hardworking and selfless in her service to the people of Budaka District.
