The Ugandan-born journalist Male Deogratius, famously known as Omusawo Tintah, has been awarded the prestigious Media Support Award of Excellence by African Descent Ontario. The ceremony, held on November 30, 2024, in Ontario, Canada, recognized his remarkable dedication to advocating for human rights and empowering marginalized communities through his media platforms.

Deogratius fled Uganda in 2024 after facing threats to his life for his outspoken work as a journalist and human rights activist. Known for his role as a presenter and production manager at Metro FM 90.8, he became a vocal critic of government oppression. To amplify the voices of the silenced, he founded HoimaPost.co.ug, an online news outlet focusing on uncensored stories and human rights violations.

“This award is not just a personal achievement; it’s a piece of love and hope for justice,” Deogratius said in his acceptance speech. He emphasized the importance of using media as a tool to bring about meaningful change and to fight for dignity and freedom for all.

Hope Alice Birungi, CEO of African Descent Ontario, praised Deogratius’ resilience and tireless advocacy. “He has made an indelible impact on Black communities in Canada and beyond. His work continues to inspire and empower.”

Deogratius dedicated the award to his colleagues, family, and the communities he serves, highlighting the importance of unity and persistence in the fight for justice.
