A third person has committed suicide in Kampala Metropolitan area in the last three days.

The unidentified man was last night found hanging in a garden in Bweyogerere, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.
This incident brings the number of death by suicide to three in just two days in Kampala after a suspect, Venus Busingye, was found hanging dead inside Kira Road police division on Friday and Police Constable, Bernard Wakuma shot himself dead on Thursday.

Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the Bweyogerere suicide incident was brought to the attention of the police by a one Mohammed Nyombi, who found a man hanging dead in his maize garden.

Nyombi is a resident of Kazinga Main Zone, Kira municipality in Wakiso District. His garden is opposite Kings Ridge Nursery School. Nyombi made an alarm that attracted residents and later Bweyogerere police was informed about the incident.

“The scene was visited by the SOCO (scene of crime officers) and a team of detectives. The body was found to be an unknown male adult approximately 40 years hanging on a rope under an avocado tree,” said Owoyesigyire.

Psychiatris, Morris Osire, said factors that trigger suicide are broad but among them could be depression, unfulfilled targets as the year is ending and frustrations.

The Bweyogerere suicide incident comes hours after panic engulfed Kira Road Police Station when Busingye who police had detained on charges of trespass was found hanging dead inside his cell. He was dragged to the Station on Boxing Day after he was found in the compound of someone’s home in Kikaya in Kisota zone.

Owoyesigyire said Busingye was taken to the police by the security guard and a tenant from the house where he was found wandering without any reason.  Police interrogated the suspect to understand how he had accessed the home but in vain.

The deceased before being led into the cells explained that he had just found himself there and couldn’t remember how he had accessed the home. Police decided to lock up the suspect hoping to interrogate him further this morning since it was already late.

To date, police is yet to understand where Busingye was coming from or heading. He is believed to have been a resident of Kyebando in Kampala Central Division as he claimed before his eventful death.

Constable Wakuma committed suicide at the home of renowned City Pastor Robert Kayanja at Ggaba, Makindye Division, in Kampala on Boxing Day. He had been guarding the home for close to a year.

“The body was found dressed in uniform and the head smashed lying on ground and the rifle by his side. The exhibits of rifle and the cartridges were recovered,” said Owoyesigyire.

Constable Wakuma whose force number was 57583 was attached to Very Important Persons Protection Unit – VIPPU based at Nsambya Police Barracks. Police by yesterday had not yet known why Wakuma terminated his life.

Criminal Investigations Directorate – CID records of 2018 show 147 cases of suicide were registered.
