Uganda’s First Lady Janet Museveni has recovered from COVID-19, President Museveni announced on Monday night.

“Good news: Maama Janet has defeated Coronavirus,” said Museveni in a statement on X.

“This morning, her samples were sent to Mbarara and they were all negative. Thank you for your prayers,” he added.

Janet, who doubles as Education Minister, tested positive for COVID-19 after a family lunch on Christmas Day at their country home in Rwakitura, experiencing weakness and a sandy feeling in the throat.

“We did a Rapid Corona test, which was negative,” said Museveni.

“However, we sent another sample to Mbarara for a PCR test and it came back Positive,” he added.

State House had earlier shared pictures showing Museveni taking a walk with Maama Janet at Rwakitura.

Museveni last week said the family decided for Maama to self- isolate in one of the houses at Rwakitura “while I continue with the programmes that we had arranged but not ones where Maama was involved.”

The President today said that, “Two days ago, I checked, again, for corona and the results were negative like they were on the 26th of December, 2023. The doctors are now saying that corona spreads more through touching yourself on the soft parts of the body (the eyes, the nose, the mouth, etc.) with infected hands than even through breathing.”

Museveni tested positive for COVID-19 in May 2023.
