Former DP President Critically Sick, Admitted

The former deputy prime minister of Uganda and ex-president of the Democratic Party, Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere’s health has deteriorated after being admitted to Rubaga Hospital in a very critical condition.

Sources close to his family disclosed that Ssemogerere was on Sunday evening admitted reportedly suffering from a long-term illness in one of his internal organs.

The DP Stalwart is remembered for being active in politics until 2005.

Dr. Ssemogerere was a presidential candidate in the disputed 1980 general elections which were won by UPC’s Milton Obote.

He then became the leader of the parliamentary opposition from 1981 – 85. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs during the presidency of Tito Okello.

He was consecutively Minister of Internal Affairs (1986-88), Foreign Affairs (1988-94), and public Service (1994-95) and at the same time held the post of deputy prime minister in Museveni’s National Resistance Movement government.

He contested against Museveni in the 1996 general elections but lost miserably.

He is also remembered for having been a delegate to the Organisation for African Unity (OAU) and the Organization’s Council of Ministers chairman from 1993-1994.
