Uganda is mourning the death of former Works and Transport Minister Eng. Monica Azuba Ntege, who passed away at the age of 72. She reportedly died at Nakasero Hospital, where she had been undergoing treatment.
Azuba served as Minister of Works and Transport from 2016 to 2019, playing a key role in overseeing major infrastructure and transport developments during her tenure. She was widely recognized for her contribution to the revival of Uganda Airlines, as well as efforts to improve the country’s road and transport network. She succeeded John Byabagambi and was later replaced by Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala.
Born in the Busoga sub-region in 1954, Azuba pursued her education at Gayaza High School before joining Makerere University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1978.
Her professional career began in the banking sector, where she worked with Uganda Commercial Bank and later Stanbic Bank Uganda, before transitioning into public service.
Beyond politics and engineering, Azuba was also celebrated in sports circles as an accomplished golfer. She held several leadership roles aimed at promoting women’s golf across Africa.
Her passing comes a little over a year after the death of her husband, adding to the sorrow felt by family, friends, and colleagues.
Leaders and members of the public have begun paying tribute to Azuba, describing her as a dedicated public servant whose leadership and professionalism left a lasting mark on Uganda. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
