The chief of defence forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has officially deactivated his widely recognized Twitter account. Known for its significant influence, the account boasted over one million followers since its creation in 2014 and frequently featured his perspectives, updates, and occasionally contentious remarks.

On January 10, 2025, General Kainerugaba released a statement explaining his decision, attributing it to a divine directive. He stated that his focus would now shift entirely to his spiritual mission and his leadership role within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

“The Lord has spoken to me and instructed me to dedicate myself to His army, the UPDF,” the general announced. “Once God’s immediate mission to bring enduring peace and security to the region is accomplished, I may reconnect with the public.”

Over the years, General Kainerugaba’s Twitter activity stirred both national and international debates. His posts ranged from motivational messages to bold and controversial comments, such as his 2022 remarks suggesting the annexation of Kenyan territory, which led to a diplomatic standoff. These incidents often put his account at the center of public attention.

Reflecting on his time on the platform, General Kainerugaba described it as a valuable journey that significantly shaped his relationship with his audience. He also thanked his followers for their consistent support and loyalty throughout his social media presence.

This isn’t the first time the general has stepped away from Twitter. In 2022, he temporarily deactivated his account but returned shortly thereafter. Whether this latest move signals a permanent departure or another temporary break remains unclear.

As he redirects his efforts toward the UPDF and regional peacebuilding, General Kainerugaba’s absence from Twitter will likely leave a void in Uganda’s online political landscape.
