Grace Akifeza Ngabirano has extended an olive branch to her political opponents and called for reconciliation following her victory in the Kisoro District Woman MP by-election. Running as an independent candidate, Akifeza won a closely contested race, securing 50,459 votes against her closest rival, Rose Kabagyeni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who received 44,982 votes.

Addressing her supporters after the announcement, Akifeza emphasized the need for unity and collaboration to foster development in Kisoro. “This victory belongs to the people of Kisoro. It is not just about politics; it is about the future of our district. Let us put our differences aside and work together for the progress of everyone,” she said.

The election, while largely peaceful, was not without controversy. The campaigns were marked by religious and political tensions that even prompted President Yoweri Museveni to issue a warning against using faith as a divisive tool. Additionally, irregularities at Busanani polling station, where voters were reportedly chased away and ballots pre-marked in favor of Kabagyeni, marred an otherwise orderly process. The Electoral Commission has called for investigations into the incident.

Despite the challenges, Akifeza’s victory signals a shift in Kisoro’s political landscape. Her decision to contest as an independent after losing in the NRM primaries showcased her determination to challenge established norms. “I chose to stand as an independent because the people needed a voice that truly represents them. This journey has been about integrity and the will of the people,” she stated.
