Parliament of Uganda has fulfilled the UGX 114 million pledge it made to the Ghetto kids meant to cover a debt the youngsters have over a house they acquired but partly paid for.

The pledge that was made by MPs last year, on December 19, 2019, on learning that the ghetto kids were on the verge of losing their home located along Salaama road over 100 M debt has been handed over to the dancing group by the speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga.

According to the Clerk to Parliament Jane Kibirige, the MPs raised a total of UGX 114,250,000, of which UGX 100 million will go towards clearing the owner, Manisul Ssekatawa, while UGX 14,250,000 is meant for the Ghetto Kids’ welfare.

She also revealed that the UGX 100 million for the house had been already been given to the landlord in person.

“We didn’t know who was who, we had to investigate who the landlord is to give him the money in the presence of the beneficiaries,” Kibirige said.

Kadaga applauded MPs for the good work and tasked the Clerk to Parliament to fast-track the transfer of property from the property owner to the dance group.

“At their age, they have promoted Uganda abroad and lifted our flag high; so we thought it wise to support them to continue with school and performances,” Kadaga said.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Patricia Nabakooza expressed gratitude to Parliament for the quick response.

“By offering to fundraise towards clearing our debt, it shall always be remembered that the Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga and the 10th Parliament offered to put a roof on over our heads; no words can really describe the joy we have, ” said Nabakooza.

In November last year, the dance group appealed to the Speaker for support to over the challenges they were facing at the time.

They cited the threat of eviction from the house they had partly paid for and the lack of fees and failure to attend shows due to lack of transport.

The Ghetto Kids is a dance group founded by Daouda Kavuma and composed of young talented children from the Katwe slum.
