NRM National Youth MP candidate for the 2026–2030 term, Mercy Kanyesigye, has urged the ruling party’s leadership to swiftly conclude the suspended elections for the National Youth League and Youth Members of Parliament.

Addressing the press in Kampala on Thursday, Kanyesigye applauded the resilience of young delegates who endured challenges and turned up at Kololo on August 27 to exercise their democratic rights, only for the process to be halted after chaotic scenes disrupted proceedings at the NRM Delegates Conference.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who also serves as the NRM National Chairperson, suspended the youth elections after scuffles broke out. By Wednesday morning, security forces had restored order, allowing other Central Executive Committee elections to proceed peacefully.

Kanyesigye noted that while calm was restored, the suspension left many delegates “distraught and uncertain about the way forward.” She described the decision as a heavy burden on party supporters, some of whom traveled long distances and abandoned work to participate in the process.

> “Our supporters remain in limbo, and it is only fair that they are given the opportunity to elect their leaders and secure our party flag bearers,” she said.

The youthful aspirant appealed to President Museveni, the NRM Secretariat, and the Party Electoral Commission to announce new dates for the suspended polls at the earliest opportunity.

She stressed that concluding the process would not only restore confidence among supporters but also strengthen the party’s core values of participation, unity, and transformation.
