The minister of Foreign Affairs Gen Abubakar Jeje Odongo has shed more light on the plans to secure and evacuate Ugandans still trapped in Afghanistan after the takeover by the Taliban militants.

The minister broke the silence after queries by sections of Ugandans on why the Ugandan government was prioritizing hosting Afghani refugees instead of securing Ugandans still held in Afghanistan.

Minister Odongo in his Twitter message noted that to the best of his knowledge, Ugandans in Afghanistan worked with either international organizations or the Afghanistan government.

“All those working with international organizations are covered because those organizations like the UN have clear evacuation protocols, and those protocols are now being employed”. Gen Odongo explained.

He added, “I am aware of about six Ugandans who were providing canine services whom we are working with partners to evacuate”.

“In addition, one Ugandan was working with the Afghan Gov’t in the department of telecommunications, and we are working with partners to evacuate him”.

“Finally, Ugandans who were employed as guards, etc., to the best of my knowledge based on information available, all returned home in April. However, if anyone has any information about any Ugandan somewhere else in Afghanistan, kindly let us know,” he added.
