Community leaders and youth in Namayingo District have called on Ambassador Barbara Nekesa Oundo, the National Treasurer of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), to present their grievances to President Yoweri Museveni. The residents raised concerns about the ongoing restrictions on access to gold mining sites, which have become their primary source of income following restrictions on fishing activities in Lake Victoria.

During a meeting held on November 23, 2024, at the launch of the Namayumba Youth Empowerment SACCO, locals detailed the hardships caused by these restrictions. According to an LC1 chairperson from a nearby village, the enforcement of these measures often involves arrests and mistreatment of residents attempting to mine gold. This has left many households grappling with economic difficulties.

Addressing the community, Ambassador Nekesa encouraged residents to explore alternative livelihoods, including commercial agriculture and education. She emphasized the importance of securing land ownership through proper land titling and avoiding the negative impact of land fragmentation.

“Focusing on commercial agriculture and processing land titles is crucial for economic stability. Land fragmentation has significantly contributed to food insecurity in several areas, and it’s something we must address,” she advised.

Nekesa, a former Woman MP for Busia District and ex-State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, acknowledged the progress made in Namayingo under President Museveni’s leadership. She highlighted the development of schools, health centers, improved roads, and strengthened security in the district.

As a gesture of support, Nekesa contributed UGX 6 million to the Namayumba SACCO, urging members to manage the funds transparently to ensure sustainability and community impact. She pledged continued backing from the NRM government to empower youth and drive local development.

The event attracted key district leaders, including Members of Parliament, Resident District Commissioners, councillors, and youth representatives, who echoed the community’s need for urgent intervention on the gold mining issue.
