The NRM candidate Edmund Ariko has been declared the winner of the hotly contested Soroti City East parliamentary race in polls conducted today.

According to the returning officer Soroti District Christine Eyu, Ariko Herbert Edmund Okworo garnered 9407 votes, followed by FDC’s Attan Moses Okia with 8771 while the UPC candidate Pascal Amuriat trailed with 115.

The number of ballots cast was 18293 while the valid votes cast were 18606. 107 votes were invalid.

Byabakama said generally the elections were peaceful save for two incidents where ballot boxes were destroyed. He said it is unfortunate that these incidents were orchestrated by elected leaders.

The Soroti East Constituency Parliamentary seat fell vacant following a court nullification of the election of former Member of Parliament Moses Attan and ordered the electoral commission to conduct a by-election for the Soroti City East seat.
