NWSC Signs New Contract  With Gauff To Supply Kampala New Water  Infrastructure-Dr.Silver Mugisha

The Government of Uganda through National water and Sewerage Corporation has signed a contract with H.P. Gauff Ingenieure in association with Artelia Eau and Environment and Gauff Consultants (U) Ltd for consulting services for the preparation of detailed design, tendering and works, supervision, rehabilitation, restructuring and extension of the Kampala water supply network.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, NWSC MD Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha said that the works are aimed at improving water supply reliability in the Kampala Metropolitan area.(i.e Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso)
“The demand for water in Kampala is about 300million litres per day whilst the current water production is about 230million litres per day. We are constructing another water treatment plant in Katosi to add 160million litres of water per day. The combined water production from Ggaba and Katosi will cater for the demand of water upto the year 2040.” he said.

Dr. Silver added that the new infrastructure when completed will evacuate water from the new Katosi system and associated reserviors in Nsumba,Sonde,Namugongo-Naguru water reservoirs and distribute it to our customers in the Kampala water supply network.

He called for accuracy in design to avoid unnecessary compensation and other related costs. He also reminded the contractor of the penalties to follow incase of any delays.

Michel Fest, Director East and Southern Africa HP Gauff assured city dwellers that the works will be completed on time.
“Gauff has been in Uganda since the early 70’s and implemented infrastructure for NWSC. We shall use our knowledge of the current system and expertise to deliver the project on time.” he said.

Guaff consultants Uganda Managing Director Mr Emmanuel Mugamba said that the signing of the agreement marks 40 years partnership with NWSC. “Previously, we have been rehabilitated the system. It is about time that we build new infrastructure to cater for the current demand.” he said

NWSC Director Projects and Capital Development Eng Paddy Twesigye said that the project will take 52 months and will include construction and supervision (21 months), superitending the defects notification period (13 months) and detailed design and preparation of tender documents.

*The scope of works*
•Rehabilitation, restructuring and extension of a total of 287kms of new mains and 26kms of replacements.
•Implementation of 60kms of secondary and tertiary distribution network along Mukono-Katosi-Kisoga-Nyenga road.

*Project Area*
The entire Greater Kampala Metropolitan area will benefit from the project, and specifically the following:

•Kampala Capital City

•Parts of Mukono District including Mukono Municipality, Goma sub-county, and parts of Nakisunga, Ntenjeru, Kyampisi and Naama sub-counties

•Part of Wakiso District including Nansana and Kira Municipalities, Kakiri and Wakiso Town Councils, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Nabweru, Nangabo, Nsangi sub-counties, and parts of Busukuma, Gombe, Kakiri, and Wakiso sub-counties

In addition to the above side of the Mukono – Katosi road, and also on either side of the Kisoga – Nyenga road. The sub-counties that will benefit are: Nakisunga and Ntenjeru in Mukono District, and Nkokonjeru, Ssi-Bukunja, Ngogwe, Buikwe and Najja in Buikwe District.

The project is funded by GoU, German Development Bank(Kfw),French Development Bank (AfD), European Investment Bank (EIB) and European Union Africa Infrastructure Fund (EU-ITF) and NWSC.
