Veteran politician and lawyer Erias Lukwago has been charged with misprision of treason and remanded to prison following his appearance before a court in Kampala on Wednesday.

Prosecutors allege that Lukwago, a prominent opposition figure and legal representative of Kizza Besigye, was aware of alleged treasonous activities but failed to report the information to the relevant authorities.

The offence of misprision of treason relates to the concealment of, or failure to disclose, knowledge of a treason offence.

Lukwago denied the charges when he appeared in court. The case has attracted significant public and political attention due to his role as a leading opposition politician and lawyer involved in several high-profile cases.

His court appearance follows his arrest earlier this week during a security operation at his residence in Kampala.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest have sparked criticism from opposition leaders, human rights activists, and members of the legal fraternity, who have questioned both the manner of the arrest and the basis of the charges.

The developments have further heightened political tensions in the country, with supporters of the opposition describing the charges as politically motivated. Government officials, however, maintain that the legal process is being conducted in accordance with the law and that all suspects are entitled to a fair hearing before the courts.

The Uganda Law Society and other legal organizations have expressed concern over the arrest and detention of Lukwago, calling for strict adherence to constitutional safeguards and due process.

Under Ugandan law, misprision of treason is distinct from treason itself. While treason involves participation in acts aimed at overthrowing or undermining the government, misprision of treason concerns the failure to report knowledge of such activities to authorities.
Lukwago was remanded as investigations continue. The case is expected to return to court at a later date as prosecutors pursue further inquiries into the allegations.

Political observers say the proceedings could have far-reaching implications for Uganda’s opposition politics and for ongoing legal cases involving senior opposition figures, including Besigye.
More details are expected to emerge as the matter progresses through the courts.
