The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabanjja, has directed the State Minister for Internal Affairs, Gen. David Muhoozi, to address the issue of police officers who are not following President Museveni’s directive to return all confiscated motorcycles to their owners.

She said this while speaking in Parliament on August 16, 2024, and expressed her disappointment with the police officers who were not cooperating.

Nabanjja further expressed concern that the police have disregarded the presidential directive and emphasized that the president’s order was for all boda bodas to be returned to their owners.

“The president directed that all the boda bodas of the young people be returned to them. I am wondering why this directive has not yet been followed. Let me direct the Ministry of Internal Affairs to prevail over the officers and have them return boda bodas to the rightful owners,” said Nabanjja.

The Mubende municipality Member of Parliament, Bashir Lubega, also accused traffic police in his constituency of confiscating boda bodas and extorting money from the riders.

He mentioned that this practice has a severe impact on the boda boda riders.

“The boda bodas everywhere in the country are victims of terror from the police. They descend on them with a lot of force wherever they go, to the extent that many of them have abandoned their boda bodas at police posts, and you can see them full. This is very bad; they are just collecting money and have resorted to roadblocks in Mubende, Katabalanga, and other places where they collect money from them. What plans do you have to stop this impunity and terror from traffic police?” retorted Lubega.

This follows a stakeholder meeting held in Kampala recently, which was chaired by the Prime Minister. In this meeting, it was resolved that the registration of boda bodas must be completed by September 1st of this year. However, it was revealed that many riders are not in possession of their bodas.nexus
