Moroto, Uganda — Police in Moroto district have successfully recovered a gun belonging to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) from a Karamojong warrior in Nadunget Town Council. The recovery took place on Friday around 9:00 PM, following a tip-off from the local village chairperson.

John Angella, the Local Council (LC1) chairperson of Nachuka village, alerted the police after spotting a suspected warrior, identified as Locur Sagal, sneaking into the village with a firearm. Upon receiving the information, officers from Nadunget Police Post responded swiftly. However, the suspect managed to evade capture, abandoning the weapon before fleeing the scene.

Michael Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the recovery of the gun and stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect. “The suspect vanished quickly after spotting security officers from a distance. The gun will be submitted to ballistic experts to determine if it has been used in any criminal activities,” Longole said.

He commended the proactive actions of the village chairperson, highlighting the importance of community involvement in maintaining security. “I urge other leaders to follow Angella’s example in reporting criminal activities to reclaim total peace in our communities,” Longole added.

Since the initiation of the Usalama Kwa Yote disarmament operations in July 2021, authorities have recovered 1,165 guns and 8,848 rounds of ammunition from Karamojong warriors. The ongoing efforts aim to reduce violence and restore peace in the region.
