Several passengers on Wednesday evening sustained serious injuries after a Jaguar Bus had collided with a Fuso lorry and overturned at Kyazanga along the Masaka-Mbarara highway.

The accident is reported to have occurred at about 6:30pm, a short distance from Kyazanga town centre in Lwengo district.

A Jaguar bus, registration number UAZ 862C heading towards Mbarara collided with a Fuso truck, registration number UBF 648R, injuring both passengers in the bus and the driver of the lorry, whose names had not yet been established.

According to eyewitnesses, several passengers were injured in the collision and rescuers were still using axes, hoes and other tools to cut the wreckage to remove those trapped inside the bus, who were still crying for help.

People at the scene said the bus was carrying over 50 passengers and many sustained fractures.

The police from Kyazanga police station arrived at the scene moments later and joined the residents to rescue those that were injured.

They managed to stop passing vehicles and asked them to rush those injured to the nearest health facilities.

Residents, however, blamed the bus driver for allegedly overspeeding.

One of the survivors, a woman said she heard a big bang and in a short while she realised when the bus was off the road, tyres facing up, causing a big stampede. She said many passengers shouted for help.

The police officers at the scene declined to speak to the press saying they were still busy rescuing causalities.
