Somali Govt Names General Odawa Yusuf As New Chief of National Armed Forces

In a significant reshuffle of military leadership, Somalia’s council of ministers, under the direction of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, has appointed Major General Odawa Yusuf as the new Chief of the National Armed Forces. The decision came during an extraordinary meeting held on Sunday evening, signaling a strategic move for Somalia’s security and defense sectors.

Major General Yusuf replaces Major General Ibrahim Sheikh, who had served as the country’s military chief since 2023. This leadership transition marks a return to familiar ground for General Yusuf, who previously held the position of Chief of the National Armed Forces from August 22, 2019, to June 19, 2023. His reappointment reflects the government’s confidence in his leadership capabilities and extensive experience in steering the armed forces through challenging times.

General Yusuf’s earlier tenure was marked by his efforts to restructure and modernize Somalia’s military, aiming to improve counterterrorism operations and enhance national security. His reappointment aligns with the government’s ongoing priorities to strengthen internal security amid regional challenges.

The council of ministers, led by Prime Minister Barre, voiced their full support for General Yusuf as he assumes command, emphasizing the importance of continuity and strategic oversight within the military. This decision also aligns with Somalia’s broader objective to solidify security and stability across the country.

This appointment is seen as a potential boost to ongoing efforts against the terrorist groups, particularly Al-Shabaab, which remains active in parts of Somalia.
