The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has released guidelines for reopening of institutions for final year students undertaking health related institutions.

In a statement which was on Tuesday September 1, 2020, addressed to all Vice Chancellors and Principals Institutions Offering health Related Training, Professor Mary. J.N Okwakol noted that finalist students undertaking training at Bachelors level in Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Nursing, Midwifery, Dental Surgery, Pharmacy, Allied Medical Professionals have been allowed to go back complete their studies.

She further added that “Finalist Postgraduate students on health related programme and Postgraduate students (doctors nurses and midwives) who are qualified and are already health practitioners are also allowed to go back to their respective institutions.”

RE: GUIDELINES FOR RE-OPENING OF INSTITUTIONS WITH FINAL YEAR STUDENTS UNDERTAKING HEALTH RELATED TRAINING.

The Government of the Republic of Uganda has addressed itself to the fact that Medical Health interns provide significant service in hospitals and other health facilities in the county. It has been noted that the current interns will complete their programme soon, and a new team would ordinarily be expected to take over from them. If the internship schedule is not followed there will be a gap which could lead to a gap in the Health Sector.

I am pleased to inform you that H.E the President has approved the re-opening of institutions with final year students undertaking Health Related Training. This is to enable the students complete their studies so to fill the human resource gap the Health Sector would likely face.

The groups of finalists considered are indicated below:

a) Finalist students undertaking training at Bachelors level in Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Nursing, Midwifery, Dental Surgery, Pharmacy, Allied Medical Professionals.

b) Finalist Postgraduate students on health related programm.

c) Postgraduate students (doctors nurses and midwives) who are qualified and are already health practitioners.

d) Finalists undertaking training at Diploma level in different disciplines.

The guidelines and a roadmap for re-opening the institutions are herewith attached.
