On Thursday, August 31, 2023, police in greater Masaka reported an accident involving a Perfect Bus that claimed two lives and injured 17 others.

According to the police statement, the accident happened at Nkoko stage, Mudala-Katovu Sub County, in Lwengo district, along the Masaka-Mbarara highway.

Twaha Kasirye, the southern police spokesperson in greater Masaka, confirmed that the accident involved a motor vehicle registration number UBF052G, a King Long bus belonging to Perfect Bus Company, and another unknown truck.

“It’s alleged that the bus was travelling from Kampala to Kanungu, and when it reached Nkoko stage in Katovu, it met with an unknown truck loaded with Matooke with full lights coming from Mbarara side to Masaka side,” Kasirye stated.

Kasirye further explained that the unknown truck loaded with matooke left its left lane and crossed to the right lane, and the driver of the bus, in the process of avoiding a head-on collision, lost control and went off the road, overturning in the valley, hence killing two passengers on the spot and injuring 17 passengers.

Those that died on the spot are identified as Musinguzi Shimon, a 28-year-old businessman from Rukungiri, and 1 and 8-month-old juvenile Erist John Witington. And 17 were seriously injured.

Police visited the scene led by the Lwengo and Kyazanga traffic teams, and the victims were taken to Lyatonde Hospital for further management, with bodies pending at Lyatonde Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
