Tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia Relishes Local Ugandan Dishes

City mogul Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia of the Ruparelia group, has lived most of his life in Uganda. You can actually trace his roots from Kasese in Western Uganda to Katwe, a Kampala suburb doing all nature of jobs, including being a special him driver on London streets… Poor man has seen it all…

As a result, he has become so accustomed to local Ugandan lifestyle, dishes and cuisines, which he often enjoys at leisure.

A few days ago The Capital Times bumped into Uganda’s richest at one of the city hangouts where he was savoring plates of local cashes that included beans, pumpkin, cassava, rice, bananas, greens, G.nuts, to mention but a few. ”You would think the man has over three more friends he was to share the same meal with,. our spy intimated on seeing a ‘hill’ of food before him.

However, as he pondered on which plate to start with, our Spy couldn’t help but to observe that he looked over whelmed by the sight of deliciousness before him all together.

Sudhir is the proprietor of the Ruparelia Group, under which he owns several hotels and apartments, among them Speke Resort Munyonyo, Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, Commonwealth Resort Hotel, Speke apartments, Kabira Country Club Bukoto, Kingdom Kampala, Speke Hotel Bukoto Heights, among others which serve exotic cuisines, but that doesn’t stop him from enjoying local dishes once a while.

He started building his empire in Uganda in 1985 after returning from the United Kingdom, when he went after being expelled from Uganda by then President Idi Amin in 1972 along with the other Asians in the country.

Ruparelia began by importing beer and salt from Kenya and subsequently started a foreign exchange bureau which laid the foundation for his entry into commercial banking. In 2013 he acquired Victoria University, Kampala.
