The Catholic Church in Uganda is mourning the loss of Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, the beloved Bishop of Jinja Diocese, who passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala. He was 72 years old.
In a heartfelt statement, the Diocese of Jinja, through its chancellor Fr. Gerald Muto, described Bishop Wamika’s passing as a “deep wound to the Church and the people he faithfully served.” The Uganda Episcopal Conference also confirmed the sad news and invited Christians across the country to pray for the repose of his soul.
Born on August 12, 1953, in what is now Budaka District, Bishop Wamika’s journey of faith began early in life. From his formative years at St. Peter’s Claver College and later Saint Pius X Minor Seminary in Nagongera, he showed a deep love for the Church and a quiet strength that would define his ministry. After completing his philosophy studies at Uganda Martyrs National Major Seminary Alokolum in Gulu, he was ordained a priest on September 22, 1979, serving the Archdiocese of Tororo with zeal and compassion.
His calling to serve at a higher level came in 1993, when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Tororo and later consecrated on February 19, 1994. In March 2010, Pope Benedict XVI entrusted him with shepherding the Diocese of Jinja, where he devoted 15 years to nurturing faith and transforming lives.
Bishop Wamika will be remembered as a gentle yet firm leader — a man who walked closely with his people, championed education, expanded health services, and strengthened Catholic media. To many, he was not just a bishop, but a father, teacher, and friend who believed deeply in service and humility.
The Diocese has asked the faithful to continue praying for him as funeral arrangements are finalized. Bishop Wamika’s legacy of love, faith, and dedication will continue to inspire generations in Eastern Uganda and beyond.
