Double tragedy has today befell Kyambogo University after the institution confirmed the death of a student and a Staff Member all reported to have succumbed to Covid-19 complications.

The student identified as Doreen Mirembe Juliet, allegedly succumbed to the deadly COVID-19 after she had been admitted at Victoria Hospital in Kampala.

The deceased student was reportedly in her second academic year pursuing a Bachelor’s of Teacher Education (BTE) before she breathed her last.

Although the University has yet to come out with an official statement about the student’s death, several students have since confirmed that the deceased was one of their own.

Similarly, a staff member at the University, Ms Sharon Atwine was pronounced dead after post mortem results showed she succumbed to the COVID-19 virus.

The deceased staff member was a Nursery Teacher at the Department of Psychology.

The death of these two comes at a time when the University witnessed a shocking spike in COVID-19 infections amongst the students in the last two-three weeks with over 50 cases recorded.

Earlier on, the University Management followed advice from a team of health experts led by Dr Monica Musenero (Senior Presidential Adviser on Epidemics and Pandemic) to close the institution for at least 10 days.

The president is set to address the nation today on the measures to be employed to combat the resurgence of the deadly pandemic. Rumour has it that the national task force resolved to close schools and institutions of learning until an appropriate solution is come to. May the Soul of the deceased Rest in eternal Peace.
